Time for some “Southern Steel”

The time is here to chase our “Southern Steel” on our trophy trout waters. Sight fishing and seeing the bite, the reel screaming runs and then fighting them to the net. Your adrenaline will be through the top, your heart races, and your smile on the grip -n- grin photo will be very big. Lets go fishing for some hog trout.

Also the big browns on the Watauga and South Holston are moving about getting ready for the spawning season. We have been catching some nice browns on recent trips. Now is the time to book for those trips.

New methods bringing special memories to everyone.

There are many new techniques that have come out in the past year in the fishing world for long rod enthusiasts. Myself and the guides I work with have been spending plenty of time fishing with the new equipment and techniques getting them tuned to our great waters of East Tennessee. There is Euro/Czech nymphing with 10 and 11 foot rods in 3 to 5 weights. Flipping these heavy nymph rigs takes a few minutes to get used to, but the rewards are well worth it. This system gives you constant contact with your flies and you feel the slightest bite. We are really loving the smiles when the folks land some of these good fish. The flies are big and have some heavy lead in them but get right in front of the fishes face getting bites that normally will get ignored on the standard nymph rigs. Here are a few from recent trips using this style of fishing.

There is also Tenkara fishing coming from Japan, but really getting plenty of attention here in the states. The folks at Tenkara USA are sending out the rods as quit as they get in. We have been using the 11′ Iwana and the 14′ 7″ Ito. These rods have brought simplicity back to fishing, they are a kind of high tech cane pole and string system like we used when out fishing with our Dad’s and Grandpaw’s. The rods are affordable and great for all levels of fisherperson’s. Most fishing is done on the small to medium creeks, but we are having great success on the Watauga and South Holston Tailwaters for trout. Here are some of our recent catches on these rods.
